Enhancing Victorian Elegance

This project involved the sensitive extension and reconfiguration of an elegant Victorian property, combining traditional architectural detailing with a more contemporary approach to the principal living spaces. At ground floor, a feature extension was designed to create a generous open-plan kitchen, dining and living area, opening directly onto a large terrace and the landscaped garden beyond. Here, the architecture takes on a deliberately more contemporary character, with expansive glazing used to maximise natural light, strengthen the connection between inside and outside, and frame long views across the garden. Alongside the new living accommodation, the scheme included an extension to provide a double garage, together with a substantial first-floor addition forming a new principal bedroom suite with a dedicated dressing area and en suite. The garage and first-floor extensions were designed to assimilate carefully with the established Victorian character of the property, reflecting its proportions, materials and architectural detailing. This more traditional approach contrasts with the lighter, contemporary treatment of the kitchen, dining and living extension, creating a clear distinction between the character-led additions and the new family living space. The completed design balances character and contemporary living, providing significantly improved accommodation while retaining the architectural presence and elegance of the original property. Not every project progresses to construction, but some designs are still worth showcasing. This scheme demonstrates how a carefully considered architectural approach can balance the character of an existing Victorian property with the demands of contemporary family living.
