CREATING A STATEMENT CONTEMPORARY EXTENSION, WITH SPLIT LEVEL LIVING.
This project involved a contemporary single-storey rear extension and internal reconfiguration, designed to create a generous open-plan living environment with a stronger connection between the house and garden. The extension accommodates a new kitchen and dining space, with a raised living area positioned beyond to create a distinctive split-level arrangement. The subtle change in floor level helps to define the different functions within the open-plan space while allowing the kitchen, dining and living areas to remain visually connected. Large sliding glazed doors extend across the rear elevation, bringing natural light deep into the space and opening the interior directly onto the landscaped terrace and garden. A series of rooflights provides additional daylight from above, helping to create a bright and spacious interior despite the depth of the enlarged floor plan. Externally, the extension adopts a contemporary architectural language, with dark horizontal timber cladding and expansive glazing creating a clear contrast with the character of the existing house. Internally, the restrained palette of dark cabinetry, natural timber flooring and carefully integrated lighting creates a cohesive backdrop to the client's furniture and artwork. The result is a highly functional family space that combines kitchen, dining and living accommodation within one continuous arrangement, while the split-level design gives each area its own sense of identity and character.
