FROM CONCEPTION TO REALITY, THE CREATION OF A UNIQUE BEACH FRONT HOME
This contemporary new-build home occupies a striking beachfront setting on Mersea Island, with the design taking clear influence from the character of the local coastal environment. The simple pitched forms and carefully selected material palette reinterpret familiar seaside architecture in a more contemporary way, combining natural timber cladding, dark metalwork and warm-toned external finishes. Generous feature glazing has been positioned to maximise natural light and frame views towards the coast, while cantilevered balconies with frameless glass balustrades create elevated external living spaces with uninterrupted views across the beach and sea. The result is a distinctive coastal home that feels both modern and strongly connected to its setting.
THE DESIGN PROCESS
Every element of the design was carefully considered to respond to its unique coastal setting, from the building’s form and material palette to the positioning of glazing and external terraces. The approach combines contemporary architecture with references to the character of Mersea Island, creating a home that feels distinctive, refined and naturally connected to the beach and sea beyond.
ARCHITECTURAL INTEREST
Architectural interest is created through the strong interplay of form, material and detail. The expressed pitched roof forms, warm timber cladding and contrasting metal finishes give the building a distinctive contemporary identity, while expansive glazing and cantilevered balconies add depth and lightness to the elevations. These elements work together to frame views, create changing shadows throughout the day and strengthen the home’s connection with its coastal setting.
