A Townhouse Reimagined
Combining two Victorian townhouses to create a contemporary family home that is set behind a period façade.
RETAINING VICTORIAN ELEGANCE, CREATING CONTEMPORARY LIVING.
This project involved the transformation of two adjoining Victorian townhouses into one contemporary family home, combining the character and proportions of the original buildings with a more open and modern approach to living. A new single-storey rear extension was introduced to create a generous kitchen, dining and living space, with large areas of glazing opening the interior towards the garden and drawing natural light deep into the plan. Above, a roof terrace provides valuable external amenity space and adds another layer to the relationship between the house and its surroundings. Internally, extensive alterations were undertaken to connect the two properties and create a cohesive sequence of spaces throughout. Contemporary detailing, rooflights, glazed floor panels, bespoke joinery and a restrained material palette sit alongside retained elements of the original Victorian fabric, creating a deliberate contrast between old and new. The result is a highly individual home that retains the character of the original townhouses while providing spacious, light-filled and flexible accommodation designed around contemporary family life.
The Design Process
The design process focused on bringing the two Victorian townhouses together as one cohesive home while retaining their original character. The internal layout was carefully reworked to improve circulation, natural light and the relationship between key living spaces, while the rear extension introduced a more contemporary architectural language through generous glazing and rooflights. The result balances retained period features with modern interventions to create a light, connected and characterful home.
Architectural Interest
Architectural interest is created through the contrast between the original Victorian fabric and a series of contemporary interventions. Large glazed openings, rooflights, bespoke joinery and carefully detailed internal connections introduce a strong modern character, while exposed brickwork and retained period features provide warmth and texture. Together, these elements create a layered interior with a clear relationship between old and new.
